Beating the Winter Blues

How to beat the winter blues with jewelry.

Getting over Blue Monday with handmade jewerly!

Did you hear about Blue Monday?? According to the media, it's the most depressing day of the year. Cliff Arnall supposedly created an algorythm that determined it is the day of the year when most people feel blue for one reason or another.

If you are like me, feeling blue isn't limited to this one Monday in January, it lasts all through the winter, and sometimes pops up through other seasons as well.

Fortunately, there are great ways to combat the winter blues! You can pop on your favorite TV show, do a little moving and shaking to get your blood flowing, or load up on your favorite jewelry!

That's right,  jewelry can help you feel happier.

Let me tell you a little story.

When I was in my teenage years, I was diagnosed with depression and something called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.). I am prone to feel the bumming effects of depression more often than your average bear, but I'm even more likely to feel it in the fall and winter.

I'd wake up in the morning on a cold January day, and instantly want to pull the covers back over my head. I just didn't even want to get out of bed. This sluggish, apathetic feeling would follow me all day. And if I had something big I had to do, like a project in school or something at work, life became an even bigger struggle that my depressed mind just wanted to shrink away from.

One day, I oozed out of bed reluctantly, knowing I had a big exam at school and dreading it. Then I remembered this beautiful necklace with a lovely opal that I'd bought a few months back at a jewelry and gem show. I'd fallen in love with it at first sight, and blown my entire month's worth of spending money on it.

It was worth the investment!

I opened my jewelry box, found the necklace, and put it on in the mirror of the bathroom. I must have spent 5 minutes just watching the fire shift within the beautiful stone. I was fascinated.

What I didn't realize until later was that this simple act of putting on my favorite necklace had switched my brain from "I don't want to do this" to "I've got this."

It started a trend for the rest of my life. Now, every day that I feel like I just can't get over the hump of my depression, I layer up on my favorite jewelry pieces. Lately, it's been these earrings!
handcrafted genuine agate earrings with silver chainmail
I love the subtle weight of them, the lacey veins and variegated colors of agate. You can often see me absent mindedly fiddling with the dangling stone while wearing them.

They just make me happy. And in the dead of winter, when getting out of bed can be like hefting a 200lb sword and fighting a monster with one hand tied behind my back and no shoes on, happier is a win!

So next time you are feeling the cold winter blues on a grey morning, try popping on a few pieces of your favorite jewelry. It just might bring an extra smile to our day, and we could all use more of those.
